CASTAIC, CA (May 12, 2022) – Hailey Smither, 28, was identified as the pedestrian killed on the 5 freeway when she was struck by a big rig.
The accident occurred around 2:20 a.m. near Lake Hughes Road on the northbound side of the 5 according to the California Highway Patrol.
According to a CHP report, “A white International Navistar was traveling northbound on I-5 Golden State Freeway, north of Lake Hughes Road at approximately 55 mph, when a female pedestrian ran across traffic lanes and was struck.”
It is unknown why Smither was running on foot across the freeway when the truck struck her and launched her several feet forward. An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
