Emergency crews arrived at the scene on Interstate 5 and found Benson lying in the road. Paramedics rushed to perform life-saving measures, but instead, they had to pronounce Hinga Benson dead at the scene. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office was called and officers had to call a tow truck to remove Benson’s vehicle from the freeway.

Cars that crashed into Benson’s Honda on Interstate 5 remained at the scene and cooperated with police officers during their investigation. Officers do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in this deadly collision in Chula Vista, according to California Highway Patrol Public-Affairs Officers Salvador Castro.

Authorities are still not certain as to why Benson got out of his vehicle on a busy freeway, but investigators are still working this accident to try and put all the pieces together. This was a horribly, tragic accident and officers hope to find answers soon.
