LAPD officials scheduled a Thursday morning news conference at their headquarters to discuss the details of the hit-and-run case in Boyle Heights. The 29-year-old Banning resident, Majano, was apprehended during a joint operation between the Los Angeles and Banning police departments, according to NBC4. He is currently being held on $50,000 bail.

The Boyle Heights hit-and-run occurred as Joshua Mora was crossing Whittier Boulevard when he was struck by the motorcycle. “I was in the middle, basically,” Mora told NBC4. “That’s when I heard the motorcyclist coming in fast. I tried to get out of the way so he wouldn’t hit me, and it turns out he took my whole leg.”

Bystanders at the scene of the hit-and-run in Boyle Heights assisted Mora until paramedics arrived. The teenager was then transported to a local hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries. Despite the ordeal, Mora expressed gratitude for his life. “I’m just thinking about the good things like me having my family and everything,” he said.

In response to the Boyle Heights hit-and-run, a GoFundMe account has been set up to help cover Mora’s medical expenses. On Wednesday, over $37,000 had been raised.

Liability In Boyle Heights Car Accidents

Despite improved safety measures for cars, motor vehicle accidents remain one of the leading causes of serious injury and death in the United States. According to the CDC, “more than 32,000 people are killed and 2 million are injured each year from motor vehicle crashes.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a car accident in Boyle Heights, including:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Dangerous turns
  • Poorly designed roadways

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid causing accidents. This is especially true for commercial drivers that work for a city. A number of collisions are due to drivers that make dangerous left turns. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 21801, the driver of any vehicle intending to turn left must yield the right of way traveling from the opposite direction close enough to pose a hazard.

If a negligent driver worked for a city, that city could potentially be liable in the event of an accident in Boyle Heights. Generally speaking, employers are vicariously liable for the negligent actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. There are a number of steps that should be taken after a car accident:

  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • A thorough independent investigation should be conducted.
