TORRANCE, CA (May 13, 2022) – Kevin Torres-Valencia, 20, was identified and arrested as the suspect who might have killed a woman in a hit-and-run accident, according to the Torrance Police Department.
The accident occurred around 1 a.m. on Wednesday near Pacific Coast Highway and Calle Mayor. Local police received calls regarding a person who was down on the street and arrived to find a female pedestrian dead as a result of a car collision.
While investigating the accident, police found surveillance footage of the suspect’s vehicle, and saw that it had struck the woman, leading to her death.
In a surprising turn of events, police said that a relative of Torres-Valencia contacted them saying that he may have been responsible for the hit-and-run death. With this tip, the Torrance police were able to arrest Torres-Valencia for felony hit-and-run.
The case is still undergoing investigation, although drugs and alcohol don’t appear to be involved in this case.
Liability In Torrance Pedestrian Accidents
Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in pedestrian accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “An estimated 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal crash-related injuries in 2017. Per trip, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash.” There are a number of factors that could lead to a pedestrian collision including:
- Speeding
- Drunk driving
- Driver distraction
- Inclement weather
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. The family of any victim that died in a pedestrian collision may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
