Khailyn Garcia Tragically Killed In Pomona Hit-And-Run Crash

Dolores Pliego killed in pedestrian accident in Costa Mesa.

Pomona, CA (January 4, 2024) A tragic hit-and-run crash on New Year’s Day took the life of 23-year-old Khailyn Garcia in Pomona. According to the Pomona Police Department, the accident occurred just before 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Center Street and Garey Avenue.

Garcia’s boyfriend, Miguel Vega, said the two attended a New Year’s Eve celebration together in Pomona. On the way home from the celebration, the two stopped on the side of the road on their way home. Garcia wasn’t feeling well and wanted to get out of the vehicle and get some fresh air, authorities said. Vega told police officers that, suddenly, a vehicle hit Garcia.

The Pomona Police Department arrived at the scene along with paramedics who rushed Garcia to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, she later passed away while at the hospital.

Vega told officers that the vehicle, a white Mercedes-Benz, never stopped and just drove away following the tragic collision.

The two had a 6-month old baby boy and were ready to start the new year with a new life together, Vega said. That life has now been stolen from him. Garcia’s family has created a GoFundMe account to help pay for funeral expenses.

Officers are searching for the suspect and Vega told ABC7 News that he just wants the hit-and-run driver to surrender to the police.

Liability In Pomona Pedestrian Accidents

Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in pedestrian accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “An estimated 137,000 pedestrians were treated in the emergency departments for nonfatal crash-related injuries in 2017. Per trip, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash.” There are a number of factors that could lead to a pedestrian collision including:

–Speeding

–Drunk driving

–Driver distraction

–Inclement weather

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. The family of any victim that died in a pedestrian collision may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
