Fontana, CA (February 20, 2024) A devastating scene unfolded on San Bernardino Avenue when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in Fontana on Thursday evening. The fatal accident happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. and was witnessed by a 10-year-old child, officers said. The driver quickly fled the scene after hitting the pedestrian, leaving a lot of unanswered questions for police officers and the community as a whole.
The pedestrian was attempting to cross San Bernardino Avenue when they were struck by either a gray SUV or pickup truck, according to Fontana Public Information Officer Daniel Romero. The deadly accident happened near Northgate Market, just west of Sierra Avenue.
Emergency crews hurried to the scene and found the victim lying on the ground with life-threatening injuries. Paramedics with San Bernardino County Fire quickly administered life-saving measures and rushed the pedestrian to a local hospital to receive treatment. Sadly, they succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officers spoke with a 10-year-old who was at the scene and witnessed the entire thing. The child told authorities what they saw and answered all of their questions, even though they were frightened by the entire ordeal. The Fontana Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is leading the investigation into this deadly collision to not only determine what happened on the evening of February 15th, but to also find the person who fled the scene.
