Authorities said the person ran from the right shoulder across all lanes of northbound Highway 101, near the Maple Street overcrossing. The California Highway Patrol said a car was in the second lane and tried to brake for the pedestrian but couldn’t stop in time. The driver also tried to swerve to avoid the pedestrian, but was unable to change lanes because of other vehicles on the highway. The front left of the car hit the pedestrian on the highway.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene and the pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.
