Bakersfield, CA (June 17, 2024) Sadness and shock spread through Bakersfield on Monday morning as news of a pedestrian’s death spread through the community. The fatal pedestrian accident occurred in the darkness of early morning at approximately 3:30 a.m., officers reported. The victim was struck by a Bakersfield Police Department vehicle and, sadly, did not survive. It happened in the 1500 block of South Union Avenue, according to reports. His name was Brandon Elliott Gabriel Flores, and he was 27.

It was pitch black outside as a patrol vehicle drove along South Union Avenue. It was 3:30 in the morning as Flores walked down the street. Suddenly, for reasons that are still unclear, the police vehicle struck the pedestrian in the 1500 block. The force from the impact knocked the pedestrian to the ground. The police officers immediately stopped and got out to check on him. The officer called for help and waited for others to arrive at the scene.

Sadly, officials pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene and called for a coroner. One of the officers in the vehicle received minor injuries in the accident and was treated at the scene, reports indicated.

Detectives with the Bakersfield Police Department are said to be conducting a “critical incident investigation” following this fatal accident. The two officers inside the patrol vehicle have both been placed on administrative leave, according to a news release from the Bakersfield Police Department. They are asking anyone who might have information regarding this accident to contact the BPD at 661-327-7111.
