Long Beach, CA (June 10, 2024) A devastating and senseless accident occurred on the Pacific Coast Highway in Long Beach on Sunday, June 9th. A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. The pedestrian was then struck by two other vehicles, officers reported. The traumatic accident took place just before 2:30 a.m., near the intersection of Molino Avenue.
It was the middle of the night in Long Beach as a pedestrian walked along the Pacific Coast Highway in the dark. He decided to cross the highway near Molino Avenue, but did so outside of the crosswalk, reports stated. A vehicle was heading east on the Pacific Coast Highway and didn’t see the man in the dark until it was too late. The vehicle struck the pedestrian, but instead of stopping, the driver hit the gas and fled the scene.
The pedestrian was knocked to the ground and laid, injured, in the no. 1 lane of the highway, officers said. A 2017 Kia Sportage was driving along the highway and ran other the pedestrian. The driver of the Kia immediately pulled over and called 911, officers said. As the driver waited for authorities, he witnessed a truck run over the pedestrian and drag him for several feet before he too fled the scene. The pedestrian had now been hit by three different vehicles and only one of them, the Kia driver, remained at the scene.
The Long Beach Police Department arrived at the scene and found the Kia on the side of the road, the driver waiting with the victim for the police. Officers hurried to the pedestrian who was still laying on the highway, but they were too late. The man was unresponsive and there was nothing they could do. Sadly, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.
Officers spoke with the driver of the Kia, who cooperated with the investigation. The driver described the truck that dragged the victim as best as they could. Officers are now looking for two different vehicles who both struck the pedestrian and fled the scene. They would like to remind drivers that leaving the scene of an accident is not only heartless, but illegal. If anyone has any information regarding this collision, they are encouraged to call the Long Beach Police Department Collision Investigation Detail Detective Ashley Van Holland. The phone number is 562-570-5130.
