Phelan, CA (May 25, 2024) A shadow of sadness lingered over the community of Phelan following an accident that claimed a pedestrian’s life. The fatal accident took place just before 10:40 p.m. at the intersection of Coyote Road and Johnson Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. It all transpired on Thursday night, May 23rd.

Darkness covered the area with only street lights offering light to the roads below, as a pedestrian walked. A Ford Mustang was also driving in the area and both approached the intersection at the same time. Due to circumstances that are still unknown, the Mustang hit the pedestrian in the intersection. The force tossed the pedestrian over the hood of the car, where they slammed into the windshield before falling to the ground. The driver immediately stopped and called 911.

The California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene and found the driver with their vehicle, the pedestrian was lying on the ground, motionless. The Mustang had significant damage to it’s hood and windshield from where the pedestrian had hit it. The San Bernardino County Firefighters arrived at the scene with an ambulance, prepared to begin life-saving measures on the pedestrian, but they were too late. They found the pedestrian unresponsive and pronounced them dead at the scene.

Officers had to close Johnson Road in both directions as they gathered information from the driver of the vehicle and are working with determine what caused this fatal accident in Phelan. While they do not believe, at this time, that drugs and alcohol were factors in this accident, they are determined to understand what happened.
