SAN JOSE, CA (September 6, 2022) – A pedestrian now identified as Jaime Lopez Perez, 26, of Pleasanton, was killed in San Jose after crashing into three vehicles and exiting his car to inspect the damage and crash scene.
KRON 4 reports that the pedestrian was driving a 2007 Toyota sedan on Hellyer Avenue around 3:30 a.m. when it crashed into three parked cars.
Perez then stepped out of his vehicle and walked on the street near the crash scene before being hit by a 2000 Dodge truck. The man, considered a pedestrian at the time of the crash, suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver of the truck was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
San Jose police say this is the 24th pedestrian fatality of the year.
Unfortunately, tragedies such as this one are too regular an occurrence. We encourage everyone to stay in their vehicles after a car accident until it is safe to move, or clear to walk to a safe location.

Liability In San Jose Pedestrian Accidents
Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in pedestrian accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “An estimated 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal crash-related injuries in 2017. Per trip, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash.” There are a number of factors that could lead to a pedestrian collision including:
- Speeding
- Drunk driving
- Driver distraction
- Inclement weather
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. The family of any victim that died in a pedestrian collision may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
