A woman pushed a shopping cart along the right dirt shoulder of Merced Avenue on Tuesday night. As she walked, a vehicle approached her, driven by a 50-year-old man. Suddenly, the vehicle struck the woman, officers reported. The force sent her to the ground and knocked over the shopping cart she was pushing. The driver of the vehicle told officers that the woman suddenly began pushing the cart onto the roadway directly in front of him. He said he had no time to brake or swerve to avoid hitting the pedestrian.
When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they found the woman on the ground and rushed to her side, ready to give life-saving medical treatment. Sadly, they discovered that she had been killed in the accident, according to reports. She was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.
