Colin Schoonover Injured In Jellico Tractor-Trailer Crash

1 killed and another seriously injured in a collision with a semi-truck in Wasco.

Jellico, TN (December 12, 2023) 42-year-old Colin Schoonover was injured in a tracto-trailer accident on Interstate 75 in Jellico. According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the Semi-truck was hauling maple syrup, which caused a sticky mess. The accident happened just after 3:30 p.m. not far from the Kentucky and Tennessee state lines.

Schoonover was driving the tractor-trailer when, for reasons still unknown, he lost control on north Interstate 75. The tractor-trailer jackknifed before crashing into the median wall and then overturning. Tennessee Highway Patrol said the trailer slid down the median wall on its passenger side before it came to a stop. As if that wasn’t enough, the big rig then caught on fire, according to reports.

Traffic on southbound Interstate 75 past Jellico and into Kentucky was backed up for hours, all the way to Rock Quarry Road, reports indicate. Officials ended up closing the interstate at the 5th Street exit so crews could clean up the sticky mess of a burned truck and maple syrup.

Schoonover was injured in this accident, but paramedics said his injuries weren’t life-threatening. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Fire fighters at the scene put out the truck fire and crews began cleaning and investigating. There hasn’t been any word on whether anyone else was injured in this collision.

Officers are still uncertain as to what caused Schoonover to lose control, but they hope to discover what happened soon, as the investigation is ongoing.

Liability In Huntington Beach Car Accidents

Despite improved safety measures for cars, motor vehicle accidents remain one of the leading causes of serious injury and death in the United States.  According to the CDC, “more than 32,000 people are killed and 2 million are injured each year from motor vehicle crashes.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a car accident including:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Dangerous turns
  • Poorly designed roadways

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid causing accidents. This is especially true for commercial drivers that work for a city. A number of collisions are due to drivers that make dangerous left turns.

If a negligent driver worked for a city, that city could potentially be liable in the event of an accident. Generally speaking, employers are vicariously liable for the negligent actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. There are a number of steps that should be taken after a car accident.

  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • A thorough independent investigation should be conducted.

The family of any victim that has died in a car accident may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and funeral expenses. It is essential that evidence is properly preserved after a car accident. A car accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
