Reno, NV (April 9, 2024) Tragedy struck on Interstate 80 in Reno on Monday evening when a collision claimed the lives of two people. The collision occurred between a big rig and a passenger vehicle in the westbound lanes of I-80, according to reports. It happened at approximately 6:49 p.m., near USA Parkway.50-year-old Christa James and 12-year-old Raymond James both lost their lives in this fatal crash.
Vehicles were driving along westbound Interstate 80 when suddenly, for reasons still unknown, a passenger vehicle slammed into the back of a big rig. Officers speculated that the big rig slowed down because of traffic in front of it, but the passenger vehicle behind it didn’t notice until it was too late.
Emergency crews hurried to the scene and found the passenger vehicle with severe front end damage. Unfortunately, the driver and the front passenger were both killed by the collision. Authorities pronounced them dead at the scene and waited for the coroner to arrive. A third occupant was in the back seat of the passenger vehicle. Paramedics evaluated them before loading them into an ambulance and taking them to a local hospital. According to police officers, the third victim is expected to make a full recovery.
Officers had to shut down all westbound lanes on Interstate 80 and traffic was detoured to Waltham Way. Investigators gathered evidence at the scene to help them better understand what happened on that interstate. A tow truck was called to remove the damaged passenger vehicle from the scene and crews cleared glass and debris from the roadway.
