Oakland, CA (October 27, 2024) Drivers on eastbound Interstate 580 in Oakland were met with traffic delays following a two-vehicle collision on Saturday afternoon. The accident tragically claimed one person’s life, according to reports. It happened just after 3:00 p.m. near the Interstate 980 Westbound ramp.
A white Toyota Camry headed along eastbound Interstate 580 on Saturday afternoon, approaching the I-980 westbound ramp. A semi-truck was also traveling on eastbound I-580. For reasons that are still unknown, the semi-truck collided with the Toyota. The impact was severe, reports indicated, sending debris and glass flying several feet into the air and landing all over the interstate. The Honda was badly damaged in the accident, officers reported.
911 calls began pouring in and emergency crews made their way to the scene of the accident. Upon arrival, they found the Toyota with major damage. It had spun around and was facing the wrong way near an overpass, officers reported. They rushed to the vehicles, ready to give emergency medical care to anyone in need. Sadly, they found the driver of the Toyota with fatal injuries. They sadly pronounced the victim dead at the scene and requested a coroner.
Officers took statements and gathered evidence. They are working to determine what exactly caused this fatal collision on I-580 in Oakland. The eastbound lanes of Interstate 580 remained closed for over 4 hours as officers investigated the scene. The Toyota was then hauled away and crews worked to clean up the debris that had been left behind.
