Initial reports indicate that a black Honda Accord, driven by 84-year-old Barbara Peters, a Huntington Beach resident, was attempting to make a left turn from westbound Ellis Avenue to southbound Magnolia Street. At the same time, Chen was riding east on Ellis Avenue in the south curbline crosswalk. As the Honda turned, it struck Charlie Chen on his bicycle.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and paramedics transported Charlie Chen to a local hospital for treatment. Sadly, Chen later died at the hospital from his injuries.

Peters remained at the scene and cooperated with police officers following the collision. Officers do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in this Fountain Valley bicycle collision. Chen’s damaged bike had to be removed from the scene after the investigation and officers are continuing to investigate this fatal collision. Officers hope to determine what exactly happened to cause this crash and who was at fault.
