Jonathan Waters of Chez Panisse killed in bike accident

BERKELEY, CA (June 2, 2022) – Jonathan Waters, 60, was tragically killed on his bicycle when he was struck by a minivan on Saturday, May 28, according to SF Chronicle. Waters had been the wine director for Chez Panisse for 32 years.

Waters lived in Berkeley and was on his way home when the accident occurred on Shattuck Avenue and 55th Street around 10:30 p.m. Emergency response took Waters to Highland Hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries around 7:40 a.m.

The driver of the minivan was identified as an 18-year-old from Alamo who remained on the scene while the accident was being investigated.

The accident is still being investigated, so additional details, including the possibility of the involvement of drugs and alcohol, are still unknown.

Jonathan Waters will be missed by the community, especially those with whom he shared his love of food and wine.

UPDATE June 6, 2022 – Oakland Police have said that charges won’t be filed against the driver that struck Waters on May 28. Officers were able to determine the cause of the accident was Waters making a left turn in front of the minivan on Shattuck and 55th. Unfortunately, the driver was unable to react or see Waters on his bicycle. Waters suffered serious head injuries as a result and passed at the hospital several hours later.
