Lompoc, CA (February 12, 2024) A life was lost on Highway 246 in the Lompoc Valley on Sunday afternoon, February 11th. The sunny afternoon was shadowed by sadness following a head-on collision that left one person dead and another injured, authorities reported. 44-year-old Nils G. Gustavson lost his life on Highway 246 that afternoon and 28-year-old Dillon Carter Sederlan was injured.
It was just after 3;30 p.m. when a sedan and a pickup truck crashed into each other, head-on, on Highway 246, just west of Mission Gate Road. The California Highway Patrol as well as the Santa Barbara County Fire Department arrived at the scene and found two badly damaged vehicles. The vehicles were blocking the highway so officers had to close a small section for a while, according to Fire Captain Scott Safechuck.

Paramedics hurried to use life-saving measures, but unfortunately, Gustavson was killed in the crash. Safechuck reported that he was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck, Sederlan, sustained moderate injuries in the collision and was transported to Lompoc Valley Medical Center, where he is expected to make a full recovery.
The CHP’s Buellton office is leading the investigation of this accident and gathered evidence at the scene. They hope to determine what exactly caused this fatal collision and who was at fault. Tow trucks were called to remove both destroyed vehicles from the highway and crews hurried to clean debris from the roadway.
