The Hyundai was traveling at only 25 miles per hour down the southbound lane freeway. Following the collision, both the Hyundai and the semi-truck ended up crossing over the center median before ending up on the north side of the interstate. The semi-truck overturned on its passenger side and the car rolled but eventually came to rest on its wheels on the shoulder of Interstate 5.

The California Highway Patrol and paramedics from the Tehama County Fire Station arrived at the scene and found both vehicles badly damaged. Officers said that one person was trapped in their vehicle and had to be removed by firefighters. Both Nsunzu and Potterton were transported to a local hospital via ambulance to receive treatment for injuries they sustained in the collision.

The No. 2 lane the Interstate 5 Freeway was closed for a period of time while crews cleaned debris, glass, and car parts from the roadway. Officers investigated the accident and searched for evidence at the scene to try and determine exactly what happened. Dawn Potterton was arrested following her release from the hospital. She was booked on charges of driving while under the influence.
