Drivers Brake For Tarantula Causing Collision In Death Valley

3 people killed in a collision on SR-163 in Las Vegas involving a semi and a motorcycle.

Death Valley, CA (October 30, 2023) A collision occurred in Death Valley on Saturday, October 28th, all because of a creepy crawler on the road. The National Park Service said tourists in the area were slamming on their brakes to avoid running over a tarantula on California 190, which is the longest straight highway through the Death Valley National Park, according to the Park Service.

A camper van was driving down the peaceful California 190 highway when the driver suddenly noticed something on the road. As they came closer, it was obvious that the crawling creature was a tarantula. The Swiss tourists inside the camper van slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting the tarantula. A 24-year-old Canadian man was on a motorcycle behind them on the highway. When they suddenly slammed on the brakes, the motorcyclist didn’t have time to react and crashed into the back of their camper van.

A National Park Service ambulance arrived at the scene and took the motorcyclist to Desert View Hospital over the state line in Pahrump, Nevada.

The Park Superintendent, Mike Reynolds, was the first park employee to arrive at the scene. The National Park Service said in a news release that Reynolds was telling people to be careful in the area. He was warning people about damaged roads from flooding, as well. He reminded motorists that they should be driving slower because of all the steep hills.

The motorcyclist is expected to make a full recovery and drugs and alcohol are not factors in this collision on the California 190 Highway in Death Valley.

Liability In Death Valley Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclists have a naturally small profile and are more likely to be overlooked by other drivers. Many collisions are due to drivers that make dangerous lane changes. According to California Vehicle Code 22107, “No person shall turn a vehicle from a direct course or move right or left upon a roadway until such movement can be made with reasonable safety and then only after the giving of an appropriate signal in the manner provided in this chapter in the event any other vehicle may be affected by the movement.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a motorcycle accident including:

  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Driver distraction
  • Inclement weather

The family of any victim that died in a motorcycle accident may be able to seek aid through a wrongful death claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are. There are, however, statute of limitations associated with civil claims. Failing to act within the statute of limitations may result in a permanent forfeiture of your rights.
