San Bernardino County, CA (April 22, 2024) An accident between a motorcycle and a van left six people injured and one dead on Saturday evening in San Bernardino County. 39-year-old Matthew Hicks from Apple Valley was riding a motorcycle and sustained fatal injuries in this crash. The collision occurred just after 6:00 p.m. on State Highway 18 in Apple Valley, officers reported.

Matthew Hicks was riding his motorcycle on Highway 18 on Saturday evening. As he rode, a white Toyota Sienna turned left onto Highway 18 from Quinnault Road. The Toyota did not yield for Hicks’ motorcycle and he ended up slamming into the side of the Toyota van. The force of the collision threw Hicks from his motorcycle, officers said.

The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department and the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Department arrived at the scene and found the motorcyclist on the ground, with life-threatening injuries. The motorcycle laid on several feet from the rider, completely smashed and damaged. Paramedics rushed Hicks to a nearby hospital where the emergency staff did everything they could. Unfortunately, Hicks succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

All six people in the van were injured in this collision, officers said. Five of them were taken to local hospitals to receive treatment. The sixth passenger, a juvenile, was Airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition, deputies said.

Deputies had to close Highway 18 from Navajo Road to Central Road as they investigated the scene and spoke with witnesses. The area remained closed for several hours as crews cleared glass and debris from the highway. Tow trucks were called to remove both the van and the motorcycle from the roadway, as well. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Investigation Team is leading this investigation.
