Head-On Collision On Highway 101 In Gaviota Claims Thomas McGregor’s Life

Thomas McGregor killed after colliding with overturned semi on Highway 101 in Gaviota.

Gaviota, CA (January 18, 2024) 25-year-old Thomas McGregor, a Santa Barbara resident, lost his life following a head-on collision with a semi-truck on Highway 101 in Gaviota. The fatal collision took place at approximately 2:48 a.m. on southbound Highway 101, officers said.

The fatal collision happened on January 5th, officers said. A commercial big rig had overturned on the edge of the highway, just west of Dos Pueblos Canyon Road. It was lying on the highway as McGregor approached it. McGregor’s pickup crashed into the overturned big rig and came to a stop in the center median. By the time police officers arrived at the scene, McGregor’s pickup had caught on fire, according to authorities. County Fire sent crews to the scene and found a male inside the pickup, identified as Thomas McGregor, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the commercial semi-truck declined hospital care, according to reports. The extent of the truck driver’s injuries, if any, have not been revealed.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused this fatal accident on southbound Highway 101 in Gaviota.
