Four Bicyclists Hit, Injured On Highway 9 In Santa Cruz County

A Bicyclist was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident in Oceanside.

Santa Cruz County, CA (February 29, 2024) A bicycle ride turned violent for four people on Tuesday, February 27th, near Felton. Four bicyclists were riding along the shoulder of Highway 9 in Santa Cruz County, when they were hit by a vehicle. All four were injured, but two of the bicyclists sustained critical injuries in the collision, authorities said.

The four bicyclists were riding together on the dirt shoulder of State Highway 9, officers said. As they rode, a Kia Forte, driven by an 85-year-old woman, was heading north on the same highway. For reasons still unknown, the vehicle swerved towards the shoulder of the road and hit the four bicyclists. The Kia then kept going until it slammed into a tree on the side of the road.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found all four bicyclists with injuries. Two of them had sustained critical injuries and were rushed to a local hospital for treatment. The other two bicyclist’s were also injured, but their injuries were not severe, officers said. They were loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital for treatment, as well.

The driver of the Kia, an 85-year-old woman, was also injured in the collision, according to reports. Her injuries were minor and she was treated at the scene. Officers do not believe that drugs or alcohol were factors in this awful crash and investigators are diligently working to determine what exactly happened on Highway 9.
