Hercules, CA (April 15, 2024) A two-vehicle collision claimed one person’s life on Sunday, April 14th, in the town of Hercules, officers reported. The fatal accident took place just before midnight in the westbound lanes of State Route 4, near Interstate 80, according to the California Highway Patrol Contra Costa office.
Initial reports indicated that a silver Buick Regal and a gray Jeep Wrangler were heading west on State Route 4 at approximately 11:54 p.m. Suddenly, for reasons still unknown, the two vehicles collided in the westbound lanes. Each vehicle only contained one occupant, officers said.
The California Highway Patrol Contra Costa office sent officers to the scene on State Route 4. They found the two vehicles in the middle of the roadway with serious body damage. Debris and glass were thrown in all directions and part of the highway was blocked. Paramedics arrived and hurried to give medical attention to those who were injured. They found the driver of the Jeep with some scrapes but, otherwise, they were uninjured. The driver of the Buick, however, was fatally injured in the collision and was already deceased. Sadly, officials pronounced them dead at the scene and called for a coroner.
Investigators are working to determine what caused this deadly collision and who was at fault.During their investigation, they discovered that the driver of the Buick was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, which could have saved their life. Tow trucks removed the damaged vehicles from the scene and crews cleaned up the glass and debris that was left behind. The CHP Contra Costa office in Martinez, is asking for any witnesses to contact them.
